People across nation are all set to celebrate the festival of harvest which is celebrated today as well as tomorrow. On this festive occasion President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Vice President Hamid Ansari greeted nation and hope a great year ahead. Makar Sankranti mark as the beginning of the year for the farmers.
President said: "These festivals are expressions of the emotional unity that is our nation's strength. May the celebrations reinforce the ties that bind us together as a nation, in peace and harmony."
While Manmohan Singh said, "Lohri, Bihu, Makar Sankranti and Pongal - are an occasion to recognize the immense contribution that our farmers make to the well-being of the country. May these festivals bring prosperity, happiness and joy for all".
Vice President Ansari, also greeted the people of the nation, he said "These festivals are celebrated in various parts of the country with traditional fervour and gaiety and mark the beginning of 'Uttarayana' and the harvest season."
Lohri is celebrated today itself that is January 13th while Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 14th of January 2012. People use to greet each other on this eve and pray for a prosperous year ahead. People eat special sweets. Children and youths use to fly kites & at certain places various competitions are arranged.
